Welcome to The Travel, Art & Design Edit on Substack!
Time to take this hidden gem of a newsletter to the next level.
Dear friends,
1. New to Substack, not to the newsletter 💌
For almost 2 decades, I’ve loved curating beautiful little newsletters full of art, design, and travel. It started back in 2007, after finishing up art school and launching an artisanal letterpress company, Sycamore Street Press, from my kitchen table. Never able to limit my writing to my own products, I had fun gathering inspiration from various nooks and crannies and sharing it all with my readers.
Over the years, my company naturally evolved, and the newsletter followed suit. We pivoted from paper goods to a creative studio. I leaned on my past experience and connections from living abroad to write a book called Paris by Design: An Inspired Guide to the City’s Creative Side. When readers requested I design a trip version of the book, I quickly said yes.
The newsletter honed in on the intel and inspiration I gathered from my travels in Paris, Provence, and beyond, and from the local creatives I’d meet along the way.
And so, here we are today—thousands of subscribers and I don’t know how many editions later. Can you believe I still love writing this thing after all these years?! And that there are many loyal readers who have been reading since the beginning?! Maybe you’re one of them, or maybe you’re brand new. Either way, welcome!

2. Why move to Substack?
The short answer? Community and connection. I started hearing the buzz around Substack in 2020 and contemplated making the move then, but at the time I just thought of it as another newsletter platform. Now, I’ve come to realize that Substacks are more than newsletters. They’re communities. They create chances to connect with people who geek out over the same niche interests—whether that’s a deep dive on the creative process, how to wear shorts, or where to find the best flea markets in France. And that’s what sold me.
Because honestly, I love leading intimate art & design-focused trips because the connections and the community we create are magical—with each other, and with the local artists who so generously invite us into their world. By moving my newsletter over to Substack, we’ll be able to tap into that same kind of collaborative magic.
